Fated mates? The unbelievable words echoed across my mind, getting louder and more insistent each time. Fated mates?

I glanced up and met Drake’s eyes across the examination table. The corners of his lips tipped up, giving me a half-smile. He hadn’t said a word since Markelius dropped the fated mates bomb a few minutes ago. He just sat there, clutching Tempest’s hand, the groove between his light brows growing deeper by the second.

I couldn’t blame him; I couldn’t quite figure out what to make of this whole thing either. Then again, I wasn’t Fae so I’d never even heard of fated mates. And I was the romantic one; Tempe would flip when she heard. A smile tugged at my lips unbidden.

“What?” Drake’s eyes blazed as they met mine.

I shook my head. “Nothing.”

“Come on, Bella, I could use something funny right now.”

I snagged my lower lip between my teeth and stared at my twin’s fingers interlaced between mine.

“Please.” Something sparked in his irises, and I couldn’t say no.

“I was thinking that Tempe’s going to lose it when she finds out about this whole fated mates business. She’s not really one that buys into the idea of true love.”

The hope in his eyes dimmed and his gaze cast down to his own hand, covering my sister’s. “No, I don’t suppose she would.”

My fingertips grazed the slightly raised skin over my heart. “How is it even possible?” I finally asked. The shock of finding Tempest wounded, and then the revelation of the mark had left me speechless until now. Not that I’d really had much time to process any of it, but I needed answers.

Drake huffed out a breath and raked his hand through his new, short hair. “I’m not sure that it is.” He glanced at the door and lowered his voice. “You’re not Fae. It doesn’t seem possible at all. I’ve already warned Markelius to keep this between us. He’s going to see if he can find any references in the palace library on multiple mates, but of course he doesn’t know you’re not Fae.”

I nodded. It was the only reason we were still in the competition. If anyone found out, we’d be disqualified and who knew what other punishment we’d face. I shuddered at the thought.

The faint glow from the mark drew my attention to Drake’s chest. As much as I tried to ignore it, I couldn’t tear my eyes away. Could it be true? It would explain the strange attraction I’d felt to him from the beginning.

“Drake, I have to admit something…”

His eyes perked up. “What?”

“I can’t deny that from the first moment I met you I felt something. Regardless of how aloof you acted, I was oddly drawn to you from the start.” I ticked my head at his symbol. “Maybe that was why.”

“Or maybe it was because I’m devastatingly good looking.”

I snorted on a laugh. After all the tension of the past hour, it felt good. “I’m serious.”

His expression sobered. “I know. Because I felt it too—for both of you.
